024, December 2004

The main idea of the multimedia project 024 is to build a temporary autonomous zone, which is open to the general public and is socially functioning as public art.  This is possible in two different ways: either a gallery or a museum can be transformed into a live social place or a shop or a supermarket can be transformed into a creative social space.  Other ways of targeting people are also possible, depending on the local possibilities. The main aim is to communicate with randomly 'chosen' public.

Public project '024' is referring to the relations between subject-work-time-money in western late capitalist society. By using graphics, digital photography, video installations and live video (VJ-ing) the project adresses a man trapped in working hours and in a daily routine. It points out a dehumanization of a 'working body' in operating processes. The combination of digital documental photography, pure graphics and remodeled icons of consumer society are sampled to criticize materialism, ownership, and excessive comsumerism in overdeveloped societies.

The open access nature of the project is bulding an ad hoc community, a collaborative group of creative visual and sound artists. The examples of such effective collaborations can be found in many online projects and in some cases of disobedient behaviour (protest). The 024 project each time tries to activate local creative individuals or groups by inviting them to join the project with their critical input. Anyone who wants to add any sound or visual material is thus able to co-create desired reality.

The first action took place on the most high-traffic street in the center of Ljubljana in an empty shop with huge display windows and mirrors facing the street. The display windows were used as canvases for projections and various graphics and posters were also mounted on the walls of the empty shop. Windows were also the only border between the outside and inside - beetween spectators and performers.

There were 10 projections running at the same time and 10 video artists/VJs participating in the process. It was one of the biggest public open platforms for live audio/visual output. The urban action started precisely at midnight on Friday and lasted continuously for 24 hours.
